Joan Blumenfeld, painter

ABOUT

I returned to painting several years ago after a successful career as an architect; at around the same time I moved to Reno, NV, and the western landscape figures large in my work.

I spent many of my teenage weekends museum and gallery hopping in NYC and elsewhere. I still get a thrill from seeing work that makes me think or feel. It always amazes me how people can see the same thing so differently; I want that unique point of view to come through in my work.

The way I paint is heavily influenced by my background; all the same ingredients go into both architecture and painting; perspective, color, form, materiality, and light.  When they are most effective, both require a unique and fresh eye that then evokes an emotional response from the viewer, including myself.

If you are interested in her work as an architect and in the social responsibility space…

She was a design principal and Global Design Director at Perkins+Will, one of the largest architecture firms worldwide. She has also been a strong voice for gender equality in the construction industry and for using design as a lever for improving public health and wellbeing.  She was President of the NY Chapter of the AIA, is one of only a handful of individuals to be a fellow of both the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and she was recipient of the 2018 “Legend” Award for Contract Magazine, a prestigious lifetime award.

She has taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Harvard Career Discovery, and Washington University.

She holds a Masters of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophical Psychology from the University of Chicago.
